When it comes to lenses there those that you love, but can’t use all the time; those that you need, but don’t love; and the rest that you don’t buy. Here are my three favourite lenses.
Lensbaby – Composer Nikkor 50mm f/1.4 Tamron 90mm f/2.8 Macro
Tamron 90mm – Macro
This was my first purchased lens. I was in love with photos of bugs, flowers, and all things small. Naively thinking that all I needed was this lens to take those type of photos, I bought it. I didn’t want to get a Nikon one either. It was just that my inability to take good photos at the time and a bigger price tag, didn’t really go well together. I thought Tamron would be a safer bet, and after reading the reviews, that weren’t bad at all, I got it. I’m still in love with this lens. It suits my obsession for details very well and it’s creamy bokeh is just perfect. Even though I don’t photograph bugs, I think this lens helped me to see the world a bit differently and played a good role in developing my style.
Nikon 50mm f1.4
This is my ‘go to’ lens for portraits, walking around, and pretty much anything. It’s sharp, and small, and sharp, and fast.. and then sharp some more? I love the buttery bokeh of it and large aperture and rarely take it off my camera.
Lensbaby – Composer
If I could photograph everything with this lens I would. It does this blurry thing, which many are not fans of, but I love it. It has a crappy manual focus (not crappy because it’s manual, but crappy cause it doesn’t focus too well at all), gives horrible harsh colours straight out of the camera, cheap plastic optics, and to top it all off, costs $350. However, it makes me think different. I can’t rely on auto focus to nail the shot, need to fidget with camera settings, and do just the right amount of blur so it won’t be tacky. It’s a toy lens that brings out my more creative side. It’s also super light, and is always with me!
