Moon Festival

Monday, September 12th, 2011

I love holidays especially when delicious food is involved! Found this box of mooncakes waiting on the kitchen counter and couldn’t help myself. Oh, they are yummy! Today happens to be Mid-Autumn festival, which is a pretty big deal over in China, Taiwan, Vietnam, and Korea. There is a similar holiday in Japan as well, but on a different date. Being a curious one, I went digging for information on the festival and now I really want to go and experience it.

Mid-Autumn Festival is known for:

  • Eating mooncakes – They had me at eating!
  • Matchmaking – How cool is that? During dances, young ladies throw their handkerchiefs to the crowd and guys catch them and return them for a chance of romance.
  • Lanterns and floats
  • Burning incense in reverence to deities
  • Fire Dragon Dancers
  • Moon rabbit – If you stare long enough at the full moon you’ll see a rabbit that lives there.

Happy Moon Festival 中秋節快樂. Go find yourself some mooncakes.

Tis the season…

Monday, November 8th, 2010

…when everything goes “Holiday.” I have a love-hate relationship with the transition. This year it started more with ‘Love’ when I got the new Joy tea (available just for the holidays) in a very adorable red Starbucks cup. As one of my favourite genius marketing companies, they have outdone themselves yet again. New cups, lattes, and teas, adorable holiday merchandise, it’s all very pretty. I’m sure the ‘hate’ part of our relationship will come with holiday music and frantic Christmas shopping. ‘Til then enjoy the seasonal drinks.

Happy Valentine’s Day!

Sunday, February 14th, 2010

Someone check my temperature! Did I eat something funny? Where did my usual resentment of Valentine’s Day go? This is weird! After so many years of complaining about the whole commercialism of this holiday, today I just don’t care. Still think that Valentine’s Day puts too much unnecessary pressure on already stressed people and companies making profit on the whole concept of love is just wrong. But today just feels good, calm, peaceful, happy and all the other cheesy synonyms that go well together. Valentine’s Day, you have surprised me this year, and I kind of like that… Hope everyone is having an awesome day. Here is some love for you.
