New Toys – Yongnuo

Wednesday, January 26th, 2011

For a very long time I’ve been waiting to buy all the little gadgets for my camera and the list of “things that would make everything easier” grew enormously. One of the ‘must haves’ was wireless flash triggers. I’ve been drooling over Pocket Wizards for years and waiting for them to make a smaller version of a clunky transceiver. They just released one for Nikon.  In the meantime, a lot of competition came on the market. Yesterday, I opened my first parcel from Hong Kong, and here they were – brand new, shiny triggers, with a year warranty. Yes, they are made by a company whose name I can hardly pronounce,  but they work wonderfully. For $70 I got a transmitter, three receivers, and a whole lot of cables that I still need to figure out. In comparison, Pocket Wizards are $780 just to start with. I’m sure that pocket wizards are superior in their digital ways, and maybe I’ll call them mine one day, but for now, I’ll have my love affair with these.

Today I [heart] – Presentation Gadgets

The announcement of iPad from Apple got me thinking about the usability of such a product. After all the jokes about the name and the giant iPhone wanna be feel, it seems like iPad might be a perfect solution for people on the go, photographers, presenters, and grandmas! Yes, grandmas! Imagine how perfect it is for cute ladies who press all the buttons at the same time while checking their email, delete programs by mistake, and then say that they didn’t do anything. The learning curve on such products is minimal and the ability to mess things up is almost none existent! iPad definitely has it’s niche, but to satisfy all the complaints, Notion Ink’s Adam comes to the rescue! It has very impressive technology and specs, theoretically works better than Apple, but it’s not Apple! …and that might be a problem. I guess we’ll see how it’ll all play out this spring: better technology for the same money vs. reliability and appeal of Apple products.
