Adam

Tuesday, November 29th, 2011

A few days after my proclamation that I love photographing men in Kevin’s post, Adam contacted me saying that he needs a few photos. LOVE IT! ‘Ask and you shell receive’ is that how that saying goes? Well, I’m terrible at the asking part, but it works! Let me try this: I WANT TO PHOTOGRAPH A WEDDING IN JAPAN! Huh..huh? Maybe I should make a separate entry of all the things I’d like to do. Before I get carried away, back to Adam. He is one of the brilliant designers behind 500px website and their iPad app. Sometimes I wish I had his rad skills, but to each their own. Not only does he design well, he also photographs amazingly well. Adam thanks for making my job incredibly easy!

Kevin

I love photographing men. Everytime I get to work with guys it’s different. I even get slightly anxious, since it’s not my regular girly photoshoot. I don’t have the comfort of going through my regular poses, playing with jewellery, photographing shoes or other details. I can’t just ask a guy to twirl around! Photographing men makes me think differently. It’s a case of  “if I were a boy, how would I want to look”? Confident, strong, a bit mischevious or maybe a ‘guy next door’ look. Different scenarios, angles and light choices play out in my head. But, I’m not a guy, and I can never predict how the photoshoot will go. Which is great in itself, because it’s always fresh and exciting. I’m always pleasantly surprised when men reveal their personalities for the camera almost immediately. With ladies it takes a bit of time for them to get comfortable in front of the lens, to which I can completely relate. But with guys, they just bring it and I LOVE it!

I met with Kevin at UofT campus which he calls ‘home’ on a Sunday afternoon as any proper PhD candidate working in a lab would. Ahhh that brought memories of endless pipeting, centrifuges, protein assays and of good ol’ genetics days. I missed it, but not enough to return to the lab.  Kevin needed a few headshots and a number of other photos for different purposes, so we combined everything into one photo session. He brought forth so much ‘handsome’ that it was ridiculous! I was looking at the camera screen and thinking GQ and 007 at the same time, that boy has style! That’s what I mean when I say that I LOVE photographing men. Thanks Kevin for spending some time with me. You rock!

Emily

Wednesday, June 15th, 2011

On a not so rainy December day, Emily took me to a moss covered majestic forest… as if i needed to fall in love with Vancouver even more. Every tree, fern, waterfall, and wild salmon was whispering “staaaay, you know it’s better here”. Alas, it wasn’t about them that day, it was all about Emily. This girl is awesome! She is very down to earth, sweet, and vibrant, but when the camera turns on, she transforms ANTM style and is so fierce my camera melts from all the hotness…in December!  Emily you’re so gorgeous, it’s ridiculous! Thanks for making this fairytale shoot possible, braving the cold, and feeding me the best soup and cookies ever! Oh, and making me fall deeper in love with Van.

Matt

Monday, June 6th, 2011

Matt has been the most difficult subject to capture on film, and not because it’s hard to photograph him, he just literally ran the other way when the camera was out. So unless I’d try to chase him down (which is impossible) it wasn’t going to happen. So I’ve waited, and waited… then waited some more, and after 8 years, he needed photos. Mmm I love my job! For a number of years Matt has been hard at training, and is finally opening his TruFit CrossFit gym in Vancouver, BC. He’s an amazing coach, who’ll get you in shape (or a Hulk if you’d like) in no time. And if you’re into MMA come out to one of his jiu jitsu classes at Dynamic, he’ll turn you into a pretzel. He’s truly one of the nicest guys you’ll ever meet.

Nidine

Thursday, May 19th, 2011

The moment I met Nidine I knew it would be a fun day! It’s started with us going the wrong way on the Canada Line since neither of us was paying much attention. Nidine suggested Gastown for the shoot, and I was ecstatic. I’ve been there once before and completely loved it: interesting buildings, cobblestone, waterfront, old mixed with new. Nidine was drop dead gorgeous in her cream dress and hot boots. I was worried that she’d freeze, since it was late November, but she kept insisting that fashion is well worth it, plus it was one of those rare sunny days in Vancouver. Off we went on our lil’ adventure exploring alleys of Gastown, sketchy at times, but with a lot of character. Nidine was such a ball of energy, up for anything while looking fabulous. Nidine, thank you so much for exploring the town with me and being completely awesome! It was an interesting day to say the least, from giving all of our change to a homeless lady who read love poems, to buying a Diacord camera off the street.

So so pretty!

I love this one. Through the glass at Starbucks.

Belinda

Monday, January 24th, 2011

Yesterday, Belinda stopped by for a few head shots for various projects and here is what we got. Well technically, the first two are what we got, and the last photo, I just loved her freckles and lil’ smirk, so a creative edit it is! I haven’t met a person who can multitask as much as she does. Phone in one hand, breakfast, in a form of an apple, in another, standing in for light tests, and doing business at the same time. She’s awesome! If you ever want to buy or sell real estate she is definitely your girl!

Evan

Friday, January 21st, 2011

First night shooting sunset at the beach. I am being all ‘cool’ (ahem, geeky) with my ND filters and slow shutters, playing with settings, completely concentrating on getting the shot, when this boy runs into my frame and just stands there. Umm “would you like a photo?” He nods. Well at least he speaks English. So I press the button. Then he strikes a pose and tries not to laugh, I take another picture. “Would you like to see these?” He runs back to me, drops on the sand, and looks at photos. After a long pose [which makes me question, if he indeed speaks English], he goes “You’re pretty! Would you like to have a dinner with me?” Hello? Come again? Did that just happen? Then he proceeds to talk about photos, which I’m completely not listening to, since my ‘how do i politely decline?’ radar went off. Well, I did pass up on dinner, and then ran into him at the buffet… Oops!  It didn’t turn out awkward at the end and I made a new friend. I also learned things about Saskatchewan and Alberta, flat lands and huge skies. Evan talked with such passion about the place he came from that it made me want to visit the prairies one day. He’s also one ‘lean, mean, rhyming machine’ which made everything more entertaining. Here is the boy with a contagious laugh and gorgeous blue eyes. Evan, thanks for making my vacation just that much better!

That was ‘strike a pose’ moment. Why do boys do this?

Made him do silly things like this

Halina

Thursday, October 21st, 2010

Every time I drive over to her house, the car trunk is full of camera equipment cause I never know when she’ll finally say “Hey, let’s go shooting.” We always plan, but when the day comes it’s either a bad hair day, or not feeling like herself, ate too much, too dark outside, ‘let’s watch a show instead’, “yoga?”…  So now I just bring my camera with me all the time. This was one of those ‘drop by for a turkey’ kind of days, but with an hour of light to spare we went shooting. Autumn colours in all it’s glory and soft buttery light = my cup of tea. But back to the girl… She’s everything I am not, and all that I am… She’s also a day older, and is my fabulous ‘twin’. Blond vs brunette, high heels vs flats, center of attention vs. ‘I’ll mind my own business’. It really is perfect. We understand each other from half a word, but don’t do anything the same. We are also trying to figure out which of us is the evil one…

This photo does not go with others, but isn’t she adorable?

Lisa

Thursday, October 14th, 2010

It wasn’t my shoot. I tagged along to be a ‘reflector girl’, figured I’d help out and play with the lensbaby. Favourite toy lens with manual focus, made-up settings, and beautiful light is a perfect combination – one after my own heart! Lisa is simply gorgeous, I couldn’t take a bad photo of her even if I tried. Dressed all in silver she was supposed to be an outlandish lady arriving on Earth, but I just couldn’t picture this beautiful creature as an alien… Love the softness and colour…

The Manly Man

Saturday, August 7th, 2010

This started with nothing more than me joking that Calvin needs a new Facebook photo. He took me up on the offer and did he ever deliver! Maybe it was the suit, or the setting, or the desire to get ‘Ari Gold’ look, but friendly and slightly shy Calvin that I know turned into a manly man. He gave so much handsomeness to my camera that I think it would have melted if we were to shoot longer. Calvin you’re awesome! And the only guy I know who can pull off a pink shirt!
