Today I [heart] – Typography

Monday, August 29th, 2011

While shuffling all the papers on my desk, trying to find the correct ‘To Do’ list, I had a brilliant idea to hang a cork board on the wall. Why didn’t I get one of those before, I really have no idea. They are brilliant! I just needed to get more push-pins and post-its, which was a perfect excuse for a trip to a stationary store. YAY!

With a silver marker in hand I ventured to make pretty signs for each day of the week. Wow, who taught me how to write?!? The mental image of what it should look like and what I actually saw written are not exactly the same. Gotta love graphic designers and their amazing pen and typography skills for making me think that pretty handwriting is easy. Speaking of typography, I enjoy the neatly organized lines of text, easy flow, and pretty colours. A good design can take a text from the initial “no one will read this” to “everyone knows it.” Here are few recent typography posters that I liked.

2. Somewhere Over the Rainbow – Libre Versalita
3. Do Not Work for Free – Visual Armory

Design Love – Take II

Monday, April 18th, 2011

After blogging for some time now, I start to notice how repetitive I can be with my titles and what I write about. After completing a new blog post about the latest interior design project, I went back to see what was written the first time around. Surprise, surprise! Exactly the same entry title, and all about how much I love good design, glass, wallpapers, mirrors, antiques and colour, which I do. But this makes me so ‘cool’ it hurts! A new line just appeared on my ‘To Do” list – READ BOOKS ON WRITING!

I was fortunate enough to work with Sharon from Sharon Kelly Interiors once again. This time around we were photographing her latest projects for a portfolio update. I’m always impressed by how well Sharon pulls together the whole look of a place with colours, flooring, furniture pieces, area rugs, light fixtures, and even the smallest design elements, like door knobs. This girl can make any space look incredible all while being considerate of client’s personal style and taste! Here are few pages that we’ve made that will be printed in a large 11″x14″ format. Enjoy.

Albums

Monday, March 14th, 2011

In a digital versus print battle of photos, print will always win. Call me old school, but no digital photo on your computer will ever compare to a leather bound album with your names embossed on the cover. It’s the “your photos look nice” versus “wow, this is amazing!” reaction from those who see them. A wedding album is something that you keep forever, cherish, and show to your grandchildren. Digital photos… get lost on hard drives. And if you think that one day you will sort through your digital files and print the ones you really like, chances are, you won’t ever get to them.

Last week I picked up Lorrie and Andrew’s album from the printers and it is just gorgeous: soft crimson leather, heavy silk paper, and large photos! The album is 12in x 16in and demands attention. It’s so large, I could hardly fit it into a 50mm frame.

Given it’s Valentine’s, leave it to me to find the oddest cards. My love for typography, unusual things, and collages prevailed once again and here you have it. Happy Valentine’s Day! I you all!

2. My Love for You is Fathomless card – MsValerieParkDistro

Valentine’s

Friday, February 11th, 2011

Valentine’s Day is just around the corner and I’m sure there are many ‘hopeless romantics’  who still wonder what to do for their sweetie pie, honey, monkey, and [insert 'pet' name here]. Well, this romantic picnic in the forest might take a little preparation, a trip to a good bakery, and many layers of clothing, but you won’t fail to impress!  The truth is, I’m not the biggest fan of Valentine’s day as it stands nowadays. The constant advertisement of jewellery and flowers, the pressure to do something ‘special’ just because it is Valentine’s day – the expectations and disappointments are definitely not my thing. However, letting the other person know what they mean to you, and making them feel appreciated and loved, is worth a lot more than anything money can buy. And if it takes a little effort, lots of sugar and hot chocolate, mixed with some candles and love poems, then why not?

All the baked goods for our romantic day in the forest were from Butter Avenue. The ever so lovely Tina also made these incredible heart shaped macarons for this Valentine’s, and I’ll be treating myself to a box of those, but perhaps not in the forest.

Hot chocolate with marshmallows!

Red Dogwood for a centerpiece.

Loved that chandelier! It made everything so magical.

Secret Jewel

Monday, February 7th, 2011

The day all the jewellery arrived at my door, I turned into a giddy little girl playing dress up. Triple silver bracelets on one arm, crystal on the other, plaid shirt and stripy PJs, my styling was impeccable! But seriously, this was one fun project to photograph! I got my favourite macro lens out, waited for good light, and shot details. What more could I have asked for? It was perfect! The ladies from Secret Jewel are making their catalogs and new website, and I was more than happy to help with photography. Their site with all these gorgeous jewellery pieces will be up and running shortly, in the meantime you can check my Facebook for more photos. And if we’re not friends on Facebook, why aren’t we?

Today I [heart] – Pretty Bathrooms

Monday, May 10th, 2010

Last year renovation in our house started with the bathroom. Many hours were spent looking at tiles, faucets, tubs, and accessories. Even ’til this day I notice tiles wherever I go.  I wonder if this ‘attention to detail’ will ever go away. I love white bathrooms with glass accessories and the ones that incorporate wood, and splashes of colour. Clean and simple (but not ‘cold’) that’s my motto when it comes to bathrooms.

Design Love

Tuesday, April 27th, 2010

If it hasn’t been apparent yet, I’m in love with good design. So I almost squeaked with happiness when I walked into Sharon’s home on my last assignment. It was just like looking at the pages of a fancy ‘Interior Design’ magazine and wishing that your house would magically turn into THAT one day! Her home was just perfect, each room flowed into another with common design elements; subtle colours, wall papers, fabrics and accessories. Sharon maximized the space with the use of mirrors, (Mirrored furniture! How cool is that!?!), glass, and reflective surfaces. The light fixtures were amazing as well. Who knew I’d love glass/airy chandeliers… no wait, I did know! It turns out that Sharon is a designer and runs Sharon Kelly Interiors. A perfect job? I sure think so!

Today I [heart] – Walk on the Beach

Monday, April 26th, 2010

If I had a split personality that’s what she would wear to the beach. Completely impractical but totally fabulous, relaxed, yet fashionable. I’ll stick with shorts and plaid, sunglasses and definitely flip flops or gladiator sandals, ’cause all I can think of is ‘sand everywhere.’ Love the ocean-blue colours, whites and golds. That water bottle is actually glass – no throw away plastics, especially at the beach. Can’t wait for the heat of the summer and beach volleyball!
